Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Dead Horse Ranch State Park is a campground, RV Park, and recreation facility located just outside Cottonwood, AZ, and only a little over an hour’s drive from Flagstaff. Just a few miles off I-17, it provides easy access to several other recreation areas, state parks, and top-quality hiking trails.

One of the most remarkable features was the Lime Kiln Trail. It’s a 15-mile mixed-use cycling and hiking trail that connects Dead Horse Ranch State Park to Red Rock State Park. You can also hop aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad to take a scenic train ride through the spectacular red rock landscape.

The park has more than a dozen trail systems ranging from quarter-mile scenic loops to more extended and more technical options.

Tucson / Lazydays KOA

The Tuscon / Lazydays KOA is, unsurprisingly, located just outside Tucson, AZ. It’s directly off I-10, less than a 15-minute drive from downtown Tucson.

This location gives you full access to everything Tucson offers, including restaurants, shopping, recreation, and a wide range of western historical sites and other cultural options.

Reason to stay at Lazydays KOA

The Lazydays KOA is a huge RV park that boasts more than 400 sites plus a range of rental cabins for other travelers. It has a robust mix of recreation facilities, including a pool, a gym, biking/walking trails, a mini-golf course, and a playground for the kids.

Its convenient location just off I-10 gives you fast access to a wide range of other recreation whenever you desire.

Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory

Butterfield RV Resort is a well-appointed RV park in the town of Benson, AZ. It’s about a 40-minute drive down I-10 to Tucson and just under half an hour to historic Tombstone, AZ.

It’s a convenient location for those traveling east-west on the interstate or looking for a comfortable home base for a spell while exploring southern Arizona.

Reason to stay at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory

Butterfield offers a range of fairly standard amenities, including full hookups and recreation facilities but has one feature that helps it stand out from the crowd. A fully functional university quality 16” telescope with nightly astronomy shows and experiences.

It’s a cool extra that lets you learn more about the night sky and check out the sights from a dark area of the country. They also offer mini-golf, golf, and several other great recreation opportunities.

Usery Mountain Regional Park

Usery Mountain RV Park can be found in a Regional Park just outside of downtown Phoenix, AZ. It gives you excellent access to everything Phoenix offers and an easy drive to several national forests and other recreation areas.

You’re in a slightly quieter and more low-key area than downtown Phoenix can be.

Reason to stay at Usery Mountain Regional Park

By far, the biggest reason to stay at Usery is convenience and access. The RV sites are spacious and well maintained, with full hookups, but it isn’t exactly a resort.

There are few recreation possibilities on-site other than hiking trail access. This is more than made up for by the park facilities’ excellent location and general high-quality standards.

Lost Dutchman State Park

Lost Dutchman is a state park located just outside Phoenix, AZ. It’s only about a 45-minute drive from downtown Phoenix. It’s named for the mythical tale of the ‘Lost Dutchman’ who hid a cache of freshly mined gold in the nearby mountains during the 1870s. The nearby town of Goldmine offers an excellent opportunity to check out an old-timey western town with gunfights, train tours, and more.

It’s an excellent spot to explore the greater Phoenix metro area while still having access to excellent hiking and other outdoor recreation. Many of the sites have a wonderful view of the nearby Superstition mountains, a must-see in the area.

Lost Dutchman State Park offers a range of recreation opportunities in a comfortable and well-maintained RV park. It has some of the best desert hiking and wildlife viewing in the world and trails suitable for all skill levels.

The campground also offers tent sites and cabins if you’re visiting with non-RVing family members.

The Palms RV Resort

The Palms RV Resort is a vast RV park located in Yuma, AZ, an easy drive to the Yuma International Airport. You can hit up the restaurants, shopping, and other Downtown amenities in a very short drive. Want to visit Mexico? Sonora is just across the border.

The area around Yuma is well known as an excellent off-roading area. You can bring your ATV or side-by-side for some rip-roaring fun out in the desert hills.

Reason to stay at The Palms RV Resort

The Palms is seriously well-provisioned with recreation possibilities and amenities. There are full hookups, of course, and a well-maintained pool, pair of spas, pickleball courts, walking trails, and even a pottery/jewelry studio.

Copper Mountain RV Park

Copper Mountain RV Park is an excellent place for a stopover just off I-8 near the Gila River. It’s in-between Phoenix and Yuma, giving you a comfortable place to stop for a while and recharge.

There’s not a ton to do in the area, but that can be a benefit for many. You can disconnect from the nearby towns and cities and just enjoy southern Arizona’s rugged beauty.

Reason to stay at Copper Mountain RV Park

Copper Mountain offers full hookups and standard amenities like a rec room, gym, and outdoor ball courts. Where it shines is its access to Arizona’s beautiful desert landscape.

There are ATV trails leading right off the property that allows you to go off-roading directly from your pad. That’s a pretty great recreational benefit in our book.

Wahweap RV and Campground

Wahweap RV Park and Campground are attached to Wahweap Marina on the shores of scenic Lake Powell. It’s just over the border with Utah and is a great place to camp for those just passing through or those looking to enjoy everything Lake Powell has to offer.

The nearby town of Page offers a good selection of groceries and several highly rated restaurants. For those looking for a quiet place to winter, it’s also an excellent option.

Reason to stay at Wahweap RV and Campground

By far, the biggest reason to stay at Wahweap is its access to Lake Powell. The attached marina has a wide selection of boats and personal watercraft available for rent and, of course, a ramp to put your own in the water.

The sites themselves are large, easy to use, and have good access to power and services through a centrally placed pedestal. The amenities include hiking and biking trails, plus lake fishing and swimming.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area

The Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area is a state-managed recreation and wilderness area located on the banks of the Arizona Lake. It’s pretty far in the backcountry but gives great access to several other recreation areas and the Petrified Forest National Park.

The town of Show Low is just a few miles away, offering shopping, groceries, and a good mix of restaurants and bars.

Reason to stay at Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area

Fool Hollow is a very well-maintained little RV park and campground with spacious sites and plenty of privacy. You’re set back in a pine forest on the banks of the lake itself. There are some recreation amenities like a playground, but the biggest draw is the boating, swimming, fishing, and hiking/biking of the recreation area itself.

Desert’s Edge RV Village

Desert’s Edge RV Village is located just outside downtown Phoenix, off I-17. It gives you excellent access to all the restaurants, shopping, and recreation opportunities of the city.

Just down the road is the delightful Hurricane Harbor, a local water park that gives a great way to beat the summer heat. The Nearby Cave Buttes Recreation Area is a local drone and model airplane hotspot, offering stunning views of the desert and nearby area. There’s also the desert botanical gardens and the Cactus League ballparks for spring training.

Reason to stay at Desert’s Edge RV Village

Desert’s Edge is a true family-friendly RV community. It offers several hundred sites with a delightful retro theme and some amenities you don’t often see at other parks.

One of our favorites was the on-site citrus grove that allows you and your family to pick your own fruit.
